Volkswagen has been around for a long time and is renowned for its classic cars. There are a variety of newer models that feature features such as keyless entry and button-to-start.
From the 1930s until the year 2000, Volkswagen used a simple metal key with flip functions. They eventually switched to a key that had a microchip, and later to smart keys.

Keyless Entry System
Most modern cars use key fobs to allow individuals to unlock the doors and start the engine without touching the vehicle. These systems use radio frequency signals to send and receive information between the key fob and the car. Keyless Start System
Keyless start lets you start your car and get in with the push of a single button. You don't have to reach to your pockets or open the door with an actual key. The key fob sends an exclusive signal to the ignition every time the button is hit.
The system functions similarly to smart keys, which have one or more antennas placed around the vehicle that detect the electronic ID of the fob as you near it. The car's transmitter is notified to disable the immobilizer and send electricity to the starter circuit that starts the engine.
If your engine is operating the system can be turned off by pressing and holding the button. The same signal is also used to lock your doors so you don't need to worry about someone stealing or locking you out of your vehicle.
While a lot of the newer VW models come with a keyless start option as standard, older models offer it as an optional feature. Keys With Transponder Chips
Often referred to as transponder chips, these are electronic micro-chips integrated into the head of your Volkswagen key. When the key is put into the ignition lock and then turned into the lock, the chip sends an electronic signal to the receiver inside your car. This signal tells your car that you have the correct key, which allows it to open and start the engine. The chip is powered by a radio signal that is sent through the antenna ring on your car.
